“I’m not a miracle!”
I thought as people proclaimed it and I was asked to write about it. “I can’t be a miracle story - I’m not healed. I have synthetic pieces in my body that overcome the broken operations of my brain allowing me to function on a daily basis. That’s not a miracle,” the thoughts continued.
I’ve hit the one-year anniversary mark from the beginning of this part of my life story. The part where the reality that hydrocephalus is a life long condition requiring ongoing medical attention truly hit us. In thinking back to the fall of 2024, however, one small but oh so huge part of the story has stood out. I may not feel like a miracle, but it doesn’t mean that God wasn’t working miracles within my story. He works in such creative ways that sometimes something that seems so small is the catapult to a changed life.
Here’s the reality of the story:
I was being discharged from ER. Even with the intense level of pain I was in, they were sending me home. My files said I had a headache condition and there was seemingly then nothing they could do for me. We were in such despair, running out of energy to fight for ourselves.
Then it happened.
In what really could have only been God (looking back on the moment), the young nurse on duty in the ER overstepped the doctor’s orders and firmly said “no, you can’t go home like this”, and she changed everything. Suddenly I had a whole team of neurological staff looking at my files, eventually finding the problem and quickly determining the solution. However, as quickly as this young nurse made that happen, she disappeared. Thinking back, it truly was almost like she was an angel sent in to save us. My husband was in despair, not knowing what to do and I was in so much pain I couldn’t fight back and she interceded for us. I wish I could remember her name, to thank her, but I know that the gratitude is owed to God. He stepped in, working through the young nurse to change everything. Had I actually went home that night, there is a pretty high chance that I wouldn’t be able to write this right now as brain damage or even death would have been imminent.
But I am. I am able to share this story because of the miracle of that nurse in the ER.
It’s a reminder to always think about the little ways that God is present in our lives. A reminder of how he can intercede at any time, in any way, using any one around us to make a huge difference. We can also remember to be ready, ready to be the one that He uses to change someone else’s life.
Declaration: I am a miracle. Today I will be aware and ready. Here I am God, make me a miracle for someone, use me to show your love.
